Ryan West, MS, CEAP, SAP Founder and President WorkSafe International
Having collectively served as a drug and alcohol counselor, clinical evaluator, employee assistance specialist, and workplace trainer and consultant for nearly two decades, Ryan firmly believes that organizations can optimize worker safety and performance when they prioritize worker health and wellbeing. He also recognizes the value of emphasizing prevention over intervention, the importance of modern policies and staff training, and the critical role of a comprehensive wellbeing program for the management and treatment of workers who choose to receive help.
Ryan is a DOT-Qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP), and the immediate past-President of the Indiana Chapter of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association. He is also a Certified Forensic Interviewer (CFI) (specializing in general body language and facial expression analysis), and a certified MBTI® and EQi-2.0® practitioner. As such, in addition to serving as a recognized authority on drug and alcohol misuse (i.e. Substance Use Disorders) and co-occurring disorders—how they develop and how they are treated—Ryan has also facilitated numerous keynotes, seminars, and workshops addressing the impact of personality and emotional intelligence on worker communication, interpersonal relationships, and team performance. He holds a master’s degree in psychology with an organizational concentration and is pursuing his doctorate in education (D.Ed.), workforce education and development track, from Penn State University. With an overarching focus on employee wellbeing and employee performance, Ryan’s current research interests include supervisory training as part of a drug-free workplace program, and the application of psychological theories and tools to organization development. Of all of his credentials, husband and father are his most treasured.
At WorkSafe International (WSI), we provide a range of leadership and all-staff trainings that boost employee wellbeing. Trainings address topics such as stress management, mental health first aid, signs and symptoms of substance misuse and impairment, and many others. WorkSafe can also guide updates to an employee assistance program (EAP), Drug-Free Workplace Program, and/or drug and alcohol policy. Thanks to professional partnerships, WSI can even introduce clients to a new EAP provider, drug testing provider, and other providers offering services that enhance worker wellbeing.
WSI embraces a multi-disciplinary, flexible approach when consulting and training, and consistently researches the latest journals, polls, and trends on the topic of worker wellbeing. WSI also possesses a deep understanding of workplace and team dynamics. All of our training programs are designed to be interactive, engaging, and customized to combat the unique challenges an organization is facing. WorkSafe also recognizes that a company can’t manage what it can’t measure. WSI seeks to clearly understand a client’s goals BEFORE a professional development training initiative is rolled out, and conducts post-training surveys AFTER a training is completed to ensure the client’s goals were met.

The research is no longer vague, it is clear: 1) Employees today are struggling with mental health and substance misuse issues like never before; 2) Worker wellbeing is directly linked to worker safety and performance; and 3) Many workers are seeking employers that prioritize and support worker wellbeing. Employers who invest in the wellbeing of their workers not only boost worker safety and performance, they are also more likely to attract and retain talent, curbing the high costs of talent acquisition.
WSI agrees that it can be very difficult to quantify an employer’s ROI for investing in any training program. That stated, WSI’s trainings and consultations incorporate elements from the latest evidence-based research studies that examine worker wellbeing and its impact on worker engagement, worker satisfaction, worker productivity and performance, and worker safety - all measures that have long-proven to bolster an organization’s bottom line.
